Resham is new High Sheriff

Leicestershire's first Sikh high sheriff has taken office.

Resham Singh Sandu took over the role from Colonel Robert Martin during a ceremony yesterday.

The year-long appointment was confirmed by the Queen last month.

Mr Sandhu said: "I'm very much looking forward to my year as High Sheriff and I'm very excited about it."

During his year he will be supporting Crimebeat and Hope Against Cancer. The ceremony was held in Woodhouse Eaves, where Col Martin lives, with a service of thanksgiving beforehand at St Paul's Parish Church, in the village.

During the service, Col Martin's chaplain, Canon Derek Buxton, collapsed while giving a sermon. He regained consciousness before being taken to hospital.

Mr Sandhu is a former chairman of Leicester's Council of Faiths.
