Coronation is remembered at Big Lunch

More than 200 people celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation by enjoying a free Sunday meal in Leicester.

The feast of vegetarian food was provided by the Sant Nirankari Mission (SNM), in Prebend Street, Highfields, as part of the nationwide Big Lunch initiative to get people together.

The Eden Project started The Big Lunch in 2009, in the belief people are better equipped to tackle challenges together.

SNM spokesman Bhupinder Anand said: "We are an organisation which welcomes people of all faiths and non-believers, too.

"We operate a food bank for those who need it and thought the Big Lunch would be a good opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the coronation."

He said more than 200 people attended the meal, to sample a wide range of dishes including noodles, sandwiches, snacks and tea and biscuits.

Other Big Lunch events in the county yesterday were held in Glen Parva, Broughton Astley, Kibworth Beauchamp, Market Harborough and Bittesby near Lutterworth.

Tributes to a faith leader

A leading member of a religious mission has died.

Rev Mahesher Singh Bhumbra, of Sandringham Avenue, Belgrave, Leicester, died on Saturday, aged 77.

He was a vice-president of the multi-faith Sant Nirankari Mission, Highfields, Leicester, and was a member of Sant Nirankari Mandal UK, from its inception in 1972.

He was also involved in social activities for young people, health activities, and projects to develop race relations.

Head of the Sant Nirankari Mission, Satguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj said: "Rev Mahesher Singh Ji will be remembered for his dedication."

His funeral will take place tomorrow, starting at Sant Nirankari Bhawan, in Prebend Street, Leicester, at 7.30am before leaving for cremation at Gilroes at 8.15am.
