RELIEF AFTER UNWANTED EDL'S VISIT

This letter appears in today's Leicester Mercury:
Relief after unwanted EDL's visit
The news that the English Defence League (EDL) march on Saturday passed with little disturbance to local residents and business owners is a relief ("Police praised for handling of EDL demo in Leicester", Mercury, February 7).
I would like to add my congratulations to the Mayor and the police for the way in which they handled the EDL march and I was pleased to see that disruption was at a minimum compared to the last march in 2010.
The tactics employed by Leicestershire Constabulary and their successful efforts to maintain order are to be commended.
Similarly, the determination of the people of Leicester to carry on as normal and not let the protest interrupt their routines is admirable.
We have made it clear to the EDL that they are not nor will they ever be welcome in our city.
Keith Vaz, MP for Leicester East
