I'm with Smita Shah this morning, Treasurer of Leicester Council of Faiths and President of Jain Samaj Europe. We're meeting to make progress toward the eventual appointment of our Silver Jubilee Promotions Assistant. The Jain Centre availed itself of a short-term intern from De Montfort Universty recently and it was Smita who suggested the Council of Faiths take on one ourselves to help coordinate our 25th anniversary celebrations.
We go over the dozen or so applicants, even the ones I already think don't fit the bill. We narrow it down to a shortlist of three, come up ith some questions that can be asked of all three, then I phone them and quiz each one. We'd hoped that by the end of the calls, the successful applicant would be obvious, but still there's nothing to choose between them. So we decide to fix a date and time to invite each of them to the Welcome Centre for a chat (I've already cleared it with the Student Employment Office at DMU that we don't need to have a formal interview for this post).
Smita and I chat for a while about what sort of work we should set the eventually appointed intern. The things that Smita hopes we can do would make you think she's more of a people person (meetings, conferences, visits, interviews), while what I'm interested in would make you think I'm more into things (books, DVDs, posters, leaflets). Hopefully, we'll meet somewhere in the middle!
