Clarification

In an article in Wednesday's paper, on the Census results, the Mercury quoted Canon Barry Naylor as saying: "We seem to be at a time when the Church seems to be doing its best to alienate people."

Canon Naylor has asked us to point out that what he meant was the Church was unintentionally alienating people on several issues, such as women bishops, and not that it was intentionally doing so.

He added: "On several issues, we have shot ourselves in the foot."We are happy to make this clear.
