Amplified Leicester: Digital Economy Act 2010

To Phoenix Square Digital Film and Media Centre this morning, for the fortnightly meeting of Amplified Leicester. Today's presentation is entitled "Legal Aspects of Online Business and the Digital Economy Act 2010", presented by John Stobart (photo above).

The Digital Economy Act 2010 enacted last month seeks to impose controversial new sanctions on web users in a bid to curb the menace of online digital piracy and copyright infringement stemming from ‘peer-to-peer’ file sharing and unregulated media exchange. Perpetrators may face punitive measures and even internet disconnection if they fall foul of the new provisions viewed by many as an unjust encroachment on creative entrepreneurism and resource distribution. The legislation’s potentially adverse implications for users of online social media and collaboration tools such as those core to Amplified Leicester’s long-term vision certainly warrant careful pause for thought. John will be on hand to tackle concerns on the Act with a presentation highlighting the key provisions and potential pitfalls Amplified Leicester participants should be cautious of in their own pursuit of the project’s collaborative objectives.

John Stobart is a Partner for Harvey Ingram LLP and specialises in corporate law. He is legal advisor to the Amplified Leicester project and an active member of the Amplified Leicester Advisory Group. John possesses extensive experience in the new media and advertising sphere in particular, having worked as internal legal counsel for an internationally renowned marketing and advertising company for the better part of a decade. John also works closely with the De Montfort, Leicester and Loughborough universities in nurturing innovative business spin-outs and social enterprise initiatives.

I found John's presentation of particular interest for two reason: on the one hand, the DEA will help the Council of Faiths preserve copyright of our leaflet texts that are posted on our website (and any other material we put there). On the other, I'm going to have to take greater care copying pictures from other websites to illustrate this blog!

Pleasant conversation with Tia Azulay, whom I met for the first time today. Tia is a freelance web content producer and digital facilitator, she offers a flexible, tailored approach to developing your online presence. She specialises in project specification, project management, content creation, and editing. Her business goes under the name of "Get It Write". I told her I'd give her a shout out on this blog; not that she seems particularly in need of that - maybe I'll benefit more from a shout out on hers!
